Smartphone based On Road Driving Behaviour in the real world-Research

Smartphone based equipment to detect Distracted Driving

Smartphone based system can record participants driving behaviour in the real world.
For several years,  Stavrinos, Director of UAB Translational Research for Injury Prevention Laboratory, used a driving simulator to research how participants respond to distraction and she started to take her research on the road using custom built andSmartphone based driving monitors.
Stavrinos says,
“Over million drivers are injured each year due to distracted driving, and 6,000 people die from collisions that was caused by Smartphone related distractions.”
However,  recently the researcher started her research on the road using custom-built, Smartphone based driving monitors. It was designed to offer particular new insight on the behavior of teens and senior citizens, the two age groups of people most likely to be involved in motor-vehicle accidents.

Insights:

If we use existing technology there is a lot of problem because it costs more to lease the equipment for several months for research purposes, this is not sufficient in today’s funding climate.

Proposed System: Using Smartphone

The devices will work on accelerometers i.e highly sensitive movement sensors which is used to decide about, when to record data. If you are interested in saving the memory- the hard braking or acceleration is smart.
Smartphone based Camera

Features of Proposed System:
  • The system also uses both the front and rear cameras of the Smartphone, where front camera pointed at the driver, and the rear camera pointed at the road ahead. Both the cameras will fire simultaneously, once a second. It captures the photos so that researchers can match the action outside the vehicle with the driver’s actions behind the wheel.
  • Broad lenses are attached to the phone’s stock cameras to improve the field of view and it plugs into the car’s cigarette lighter for continuous power availability. Stavrinos said, accelerometer will start working as soon as you move.
  • The image can be captured every second and it turns off when the car has been stopped or motionless for five minutes.

Global Positioning System:

GPS records using Smartphones records where the drivers have been and how many trips they drive in a day, and the routes they have decided to reach there.

Distracted Driving:

Driving distractions can be splitted into three groups : Manual, visual and cognitive.Manual distraction involves taking one’s hands off the wheel , while visual distraction involves by taking one’s eyes off the road. Cognitive distraction will occur when an individual’s focus is not directly on the act of driving.
Distracted driving influenced by the advancement of technology, that includes talking on the Smartphone or texting a message, that can require a combination of three groups of distractions. These distractions are particularly very dangerous and it causes major safety threats.

 In the Real World?

Previous research says that, once the camera has been installed, drivers forget about the camera and get back to the normal driving. Stavrinos says,”We can capture driver’s behaviour within two weeks”.
Stavrinos started her research which involves 120 drivers. In addition to basic information they also collected self report which is used to compare two data set to verify the accuracy and principal tool to study about driving behaviour.
