Smart Luggage! Well there have been many efforts at a take on Smart Bags. But this time this new effort is going to make you turn your head. South Korea’s leading Electronics Manufacturer Samsung and Hong Kong based Luggage Manufacturer Samsonite are teaming up together to make Smart Bags. These Smart Bags
are expected to be easier to buy and more accessible. The last thing
that you would be looking at the end of a tiresome journey or holiday is
for some one to ease off some weight from your shoulders. You need not
wait before the conveyor belt at the airport staring at when your
luggage will arrive.
These Smart Bags are expected to include
loads of location and mobile notification features. Features that are
included are GPS tracking, anti-tampering alerts and warnings when ever
you tend to wander away. This is just the stepping stone. This
technology of using global positioning system similar to those found on
the mobile phones will definitely win over and make it easier to track a
bag in the carousel. The GPS could indeed share specific information
with the owner’s mobile just in case you are prone to leaving bags
behind. The system could alert you if you tend to stary away a few
meters from the luggage.
Smart Bags |Samsonite
Samsonite is working with Emirates,
Lufthansa and KLM Air France airlines on smart bags that checks itself
in! The airlines are working on technology that means as soon as the
passenger arrives at the airport the chip would identify who owns the
bag. Passengers can already generate their own boarding pass at home.
All that you need to do is drop off your luggage and your Smart Bag
would tell the airport about your airline, the weight of the baggage and
your particular destination. It will be programmed with all the details
that are needed for the journey.
Smart Bags |Samsung
Samsung has also ventured into a similar
technology. Samsung is experimenting with self-propelled luggage that
would follow you around in the airport. But the technology is still too
unwieldy to be practically viable. Well that is because there is a large
engine that is fitted that is about one third of the entire size. As
such the engine would add more weight to the bulk. But we can soon
expect to not worry about carrying luggage across the airport.
Smart Bags |Detailed Description from the Manufacturers
Samsonite Chief Executive, Ramesh Tainwala says,
Smart
luggage will be able to communicate with you but it needs to be able to
do much more than just give its location. We are working with Samsung
to create something that is more than a gimmick. This is a utopia we are
working towards but we are not quite yet. It is a blue sky idea where
the bag will follow you 6 inches behind. It is a bit like a programmable
remote control car. At this stage the real focus is on a motor with a
remote control that needs to be light and small. The early prototypes
uses an engine that takes up a third of the space and weighs 20 kilos.
But if you look at music speakers, they used to be huge and are now
tiny. So we revisit this project regularly. Emirates and Lufthansa are
working on this. There is no reason why luggage can’t get connected. If
you can communicate with your bag they why not the airlines? We are
trying to encourage people to change their bags every six months to keep
pace with the trends. The most important thing is luggage must be seen
as a beautiful object of desire and part of your personality. When you
walk with luggage it says something about you.
Smart Bags |Availability & Price
Reports suggest that in the next few
weeks the smart bags will start a trial in France and Germany where the
customers can personalise their bags online printing their names on the
wheel or handle. It can later be eventually personalised in terms of
colours and emblazed on with designs. It seems to also be a big label in
the price that says £600 a piece.
