Chirp is
a London based company that allows you to transfer data between devices
using just audio clips. The company recently announced that it is
opening its platform for developers. It is expected now that Chirp,
the sharing app lets you send files through sound is about to get more
powerful now. This app now has a SDK for mobile developers that opens up
the software so that now any app could implement Chirp’s technology.
Chirp App | Technology |
If you are clueless about what the app does here is how it works. It essentially encodes a URL. The URL is encoded into a soundbite or ‘song’.
This soundbite can be picked up by other devices. This is done without
the need to pair devices or enter any passwords. Practically it’s
actually not sending the full file, but sharing the link to access the
file. There are a lot of things that you can do with URL these days.
With Chirp’s SDK the developers can share contents, payments and gaming.
The SDK is currently private. You may sign up and try out the SDK on
the developer’s page.
Chirp App | Working |
⇒ Just Select a compatible file from your phone –> Click the Chirp button and other devices can access the media instantly.
⇒ Each of the Chirp lasts for a couple of seconds and the receiving device listens for a handful of notes played in a certain order, in a certain range and at a certain speed.
⇒ While there are also other ways of sharing files and date in real time like Bluetooth, Chirp does not require to pair in advance. There is also no need to set up an account. Also this is a quicker way of sharing files.
⇒ As already mentioned the file itself isn’t sent peer to peer. It only generates a link to access it on Chirp’s servers. But it may seem like the process at the receivers occur instantly.
Chirp App | Other Projects |
Chirp will launch a Chrome Plugin
that will root its technology onto Macs and PCs via the browser. This
plugin will let users chirp webpages to their phones, and also is an
easy way of grabbing map URLs, phone numbers or other information.
Chirp App | The Future |
Chirp is a very effective way of
sharing data with multiple people at the same time. The sharing is
possible as long as the phone lies in the audio range of the sender.
This could hence be used as for mass broadcast networks like TV and
radio and also send files to millions of people in a short duration.
This can also be designed to connect with physical objects like toys,
letting children download content from sound clips embedded in their
favourite toy. This feature is enabled in the tie-up with Arduino.
Arduino is an open source computer electronics platform for hackers and
prototypers. This implies that the Chirp encoders are available for the
burgeoning “Internet of Things” industry, This could be also included in
the objects of the future. Chirpino as the service is named will be
available as a free download.
Chirp App | Bottomline |
The Chirp app technology is smart in
terms of the technique of deployment and is some what based on the
pre-existing technology. Pre- existing technology like audio tapes were a
long time ago used to load applications on home devices, dial-up modems
that used sound to access networks were also present.
For now, Chirp may be termed under
“potential,” compared to the first Chirp app launched three years ago.
Chirp is still very limited in terms of what files you’re able to
transfer between devices on mobile, though other common file types will
be supported when the web-based version of the service comes to
fruition. Also, there is currently no way to download a file — offline
access is enabled through caches within the Chirp app, but what’s really
needed is full, peer-to-peer transfers that lets anyone download a file
or document. We’re told that this is in the works, though no timescale
was given.
The company’s first foray into licensing
its technology via an SDK indicates how it intends to make money in the
long-term. For now, however, Chirp has also said that it has a patent
pending on its technology for transferring short codes over-the-air
(OTA).
Patrick Bergel, founder and creator of Chirp says,
“We’re
a small company with big ambitions – we’re creating an internet made of
sound and we’re delighted how people have embraced Chirp to share
information. It’s even more exciting to have a long waiting list of
developers wanting to get their hands on our SDK, so their apps can sing
too.”
