Anguilliform fishes are known for their superior flexibility when compared with other species of fishes. Inspired by these Anguilliform fishes flexibility, a scientists team in Singapore have created and developed the eel-like robotic fish prototype bearing in mind to reach the deep sea.
The eel-like robotic fish is designed small, stylish yet intelligent enough for it to operate autonomously underwater. This eel-like robotic fish was presented with a new form of central pattern generator model that helps the prototype to replicate successfully the swimming pattern of a real Anguilliform fish. This gets driven by an artificial neural network, an outer amplitude modulator and 3D oscillators.
Also this robotic fish looking like a snake (snake-like form) gives it the amphibious potential; it gets the similar undulatory locomotion both in water as well as in solid grounds.
The scientists have conducted many experiments and simulations on this robotic fish, prepared with a motion library to adjust accordingly with different scenarios. And this Anguilliform robotic fish as it was able to swim both forward and backward as predicted, the results proved to be validating the effectiveness of the proposed controllers. This was confirmed by the National University of Singapore’s Jianxin Xu who is also the co-author of the project.
So the robotic fish designed to move both forward and backward and also turn around through different reference inputs is sure to allow marine forces to reach deep into the sea where it is difficult otherwise or even impossible for divers to reach. Being small and sophisticated, this eel-like robotic fish operating by itself underwater is sure to bring about the scan of the deep sea to the knowledge of mankind.
This work of the National University of Singapore’s scientist’s team was published in the journal World Scientific.
